Potato storage disinfection and sanitation
Potato storage diseases are often difficult to control once they occur inside storages for two reasons: a) there are very few post harvest chemicals for control of diseases registered for use on potatoes and b) the storage environment and conditions can favor the spread of certain diseases. Disinfection is a preventive procedure designed to kill disease-causing agents. Successful disinfection of potato storages and handling equipment will greatly reduce disease problems in potato storages.

Commercial application of sprout inhibitor CIPC to storage potatoes
Modern potato storages are designed to store 50,000 to over 500,000 hundred weight of potatoes in bulk piles. Successful long-term storage of potatoes requires using a sprout inhibitor in combination with proper storage management. CIPC inhibits potato sprout development by interfering with spindle formation during cell division.CIPC is applied as an aerosol or emulsifiable concentrate (EC). Commercial applicators licensed by the Idaho Department of Agriculture apply the CIPC aerosol formulation to bulk potatoes in storage.

Spearmint and peppermint as alternative sprout inhibitors
Research done at Aberdeen, USA. Spearmint (K296) and peppermint (K397) oils were applied as sprout inhibitors using a thermal aerosol method, ultrasonic nebulization method, and a wick application method which allowed a small amount of the volatile oils to be continuously present in the air stream. Single, double, triple and continuous applications were compared.

Effect of storage environments on seed productivity
Nine seed storage facilities were chosen to evaluate the effect of the seed storage environments on the productivity of the seed that is stored in the structure. The storages ranged from A-frame, straw insulated, non aerated and non humidified to a very modern metal structure with computer controlled environmental conditions. These structures represent the range of storages that supply commercial seed to the growers.

Potato Storage and Processing
A processing potato must have a high specific gravity and a low sugar content. A high specific gravity is necessary because it indicates how much water must be evaporated from the potato during the dehydration process. It is actually a measure of the dry matter or "solids" in the potato. High specific gravity potatoes make the best french fries and dehydrated potato products.
