Leafminers - A Major Insect Pest In
The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR),
Philippines
Leafminers (LMs) in the genus liriomyza spp. (Dipteria:Agromyzidae) are one if the most difficult insect pests to manage on numerous vegetable and ornamental crops in CAR, Philippines. The rise of LMs to a major pest status has been attributed largely to extreme polyphagy, ability to rapidly develop resistance to several groups of insecticides, and the elimination of natural enemies by abuse and misuse of insecticides.

The first reported LM infestation of an economic importance in the Philippines was observed in Loo, Buguias, Benguet Province, on Potato crop during the first week of December 1999. From January to February 2000, LM damaged more than 1,000 hectares.
