Characteristics of leafminers
All
LM species are widely distributed, with
overlapping host ranges, short development time,
and show great morphological/ external similarity.
This adds to the taxonomic confusion/
misidentification of all harmful LM species. An
ability to recognize and delimit species or even
distinct host races can obscure critical
understanding of pest biology and hinder
management and quarantine efforts.

Reasons for their sudden prominence
- Failure of strict domestic and international plant quarantine procedures at the port of entries.
- Lack of an insecticide use policy that disregards the development of insecticide resistance. Field tests suggest that LMs have developed resistance to many commercially available insecticides.
- Lack of basic understanding of the biology and ecology of LMs because they were earlier considered as pest of minor of secondary importance. In general, all LMs have high reproductive capacity.
